Aug 22: A Virtual Welcome Mat

Welcome! Wipe your feet on the mat, duck your head, and step inside the first installment of the Poetic Spaces Blog, a place to muse about the magical in architecture, with an emphasis on tiny buildings. As a virtual edifice, this blog has the advantage of being adaptable. So imagine it anyway you like. You can pull that overstuffed chair closer to the fire in the library and put your feet on the grate. Or curl up in the cushioned window seat where the breeze stirs the gauze curtains and watch the boats sailing on the bay. Or lie back in the hammock swinging in the tree house, sunlight dappled by maple leaves, goldfinches and chickadees calling. In whatever style you prefer, join me.

I’m Jody Melander. I’m an artist on Cape Cod Massachusetts with an eclectic background in (among other things) classical languages and archaeology, natural history and environmental education, faux painting, printmaking, and ceramics. I’ve recently begun a business called Poetic Spaces, creating and constructing “backyard dream houses” and other architectural fantasies. These small buildings are designed to be both tiny enough to embrace a child, and roomy enough to enchant an adult. Each is a unique work of art, but totally functional. For more about me and my projects please visit jodymelander.com or click on the links at the top of this page.

As a child I made balsa wood and plaster models of half-timbered houses, and pine-bowed shelters in the woods. I spent hours drawing towns and castles and underground passages on rolls of shelf paper, the advantage of a virtually endless roll being that paper size didn’t arbitrarily limit my imagination. My current building projects are an extension of these earlier passions (obsessions?). I envision this blog as another place to formally address some of my ideas and interests, but in a more intellectual rather than hands-on way. And like the roll of shelf paper, a blog is appealingly without arbitrary boundaries. Who knows where impulse will lead... what lies at the end of the secret passageway?

I anticipate an echo if I sit in here talking to myself, though, so feel free to join in the dialogue – comments are welcomed.
